Naxxar Lions registered an important win in their bid to avoid automatic relegation to the Challenge League as they defeated Gzira United 2-0 in a match from the 360Sports Malta Premier Bottom 6 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Monday.

The Lions join the Maroons on the 19-point mark, three ahead of Balzan and at this point, both Naxxar and Gzira need a point from their final match this weekend to condemn Balzan to relegation with the Lions facing Melita in the relegation play-out. On the other hand, should Balzan beat Naxxar Lions, the Lions would be the ones to be relegated with Balzan facing Melita in the play-out.

Naxxar took the lead on 45 minutes thanks to Edson Farias whose direct freekick gave goalkeeper Giulio Mangano no chance.

Bacary Sane doubled the score eleven minutes from time after a Takuma Yamaguchi freekick from the right created havoc inside the area.
