Assikura Women’s Knock-Out: Hibs seek redemption, Mġarr chase history

A new chapter in Maltese women’s football will be written this Thursday as Hibernians and Mġarr United clash in the final of the Assikura Women’s Knock-Out at the Centenary Stadium. Kick-off is set for 4pm.

For Hibernians, this marks a third consecutive final appearance. After back-to-back defeats against Swieqi United and Birkirkara, the Paolites are determined to end their cup drought – their last cup success was in 2015/2016.

They reached the final by defeating San Ġwann 3-0 in the semi-finals, thanks to goals from Alexis Espitia, Joelma, and Martina Borg, who will hang up her boots after this match. Their quarter-final victory over reigning league champions Swieqi United, sealed through a dramatic penalty shoot-out, demonstrated their resilience.

Meanwhile, Mġarr United are eyeing history. This is a golden opportunity to lift their first-ever women’s football silverware, and they have the form to back their ambitions. The Greens cruised past Lija Athletic 8-0 in the semi-finals, with Argentine forward Maria Hernandez netting twice. They also eliminated trophy holders and record winners Birkirkara in the quarter-finals, triumphing 3-1.

Mġarr may enter the final as slight favourites, having finished above Hibernians in the Top Four league phase despite the Paolites leading the standings for majority of the campaign. Crucially, they remained unbeaten in five encounters against Hibernians this season—winning twice (3-0, 3-1) and drawing three times.

The match will be broadcast live on TVMSport+.

LIST OF WINNERS:

BIRKIRKARA – 17
HIBERNIANS – 5
RABAT AJAX – 3
MOSTA – 1
SWIEQI UNITED – 1
