Floriana secured third place and hence a spot in the UEFA Conference League this summer after beating Sliema Wanderers 3-0 in the 360Sports Malta Premier play-off for third place at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Friday.
The Greens therefore bounced back from the defeat to Hamrun Spartans on penalties to secure European football and will now turn their focus on the Meridianbet FA Trophy where they would be facing Birkirkara in the semi-finals.
On the other hand, the season is over for Sliema Wanderers but they still stand a chance of making it to European football unless Hibernians win the FA Trophy as the other three semi-finalists – Hamrun Spartans, Birkirkara and Floriana have already secured a spot in UEFA competitions.
Floriana took the lead on 35 minutes when off a cross by Aleandro Garzia, there was an erratic clearance by Adam Magri Overend, goalkeeper Kelvin Emeka Agu tried to clear the ball but Jork Becerra’s acrobatic shot placed the ball at the back of the net.
Seven minutes in the second half, Floriana doubled the score courtesy of Fernandinho who conclud a good move with a shot from the edge of the area which beat Agu.
On 66 minutes, Franklin Sasere made it 3-0 when he received the ball in midfield and advanced on the right and into the area, lobbing the ball over the Sliema goalkeeper.
Substitute Elvis Mashike scored a fourth goal on 90 minutes, hitting home after a shot by Gabriel Sotomayor was partially saved by Agu.
