Hibernians secured a spot in the final of the Meridianbet FA Trophy as they defeated champions Hamrun Spartans in the second semi-final at the National Stadium on Wednesday.
The Paolites, who had defeated Zebbug Rangers 4-0, Qala Saints 3-0 and Naxxar Lions 2-0 in the previous rounds. therefore maintain alive hopes of winning the FA Trophy and securing a spot in the UEFA Conference League.
On the other hand, Hamrun Spartans miss out on the treble as they were hoping to finish the season with success in the FA Trophy after winning the 360Sports Malta Premier title and the BOV Super Cup.
Hibernians took the lead on 31 minutes when off a Kurt Shaw throw in, there was a short clearance by the Hamrun defence, Bjorn Kristensen’s powerful shot from outside the area was blocked by Henry Bonello but Jurgen Degabriele placed the ball at the back of the net from close range.
Two minutes from the end of the first half, the Paolites doubled the score when they were awarded a penalty after Miullen was brought down inside the area by Joseph Mbong and from the penalty spot, Lucas Villela converted.
Hamrun reduced the gap twelve minutes in the second half when off a through ball by Henry Bonello, Raphael Lopes served Joseph Mbong on the right and the latter rounded Rui Bruno before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Pablo Sanchez.
