Zach Muscat joins GD Chaves in Portugal

Malta international Zach Muscat joined Portuguese Second Division side GD Chaves.

A product of Pietà Hotspurs, Muscat joined Birkirkara in 2012. His first experience abroad was with Akragas, joining them in January 2016. The following season, he moved to Arezzo where he spent two years, helping his team avoid relegation despite the club’s financial troubles. In 2018, he joined Pistoiese, signing a two-year deal but moved to SC Olhanense the following season. Muscat then moved to Casa Pia in 2020 with whom he won promotion to the top division but in 2022, he joined SC Farense with whom he won promotion and eventually played in the Primeira Liga. Last February, he joined Şanlıurfaspor in the Turkish second division.

Grupo Desportivo de Chaves, commonly known as Chaves, are based in Chaves. They are currently playing in the Liga Portugal 2, following their relegation from the Primeira Liga in 2023–24. Chaves have competed in the Portuguese top division 18 times and had their best finish of fifth-place in the 1989–90 season. Last season, they placed seventh in the second division.
