The Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) welcomes the significant progress achieved in ongoing discussions with key stakeholders, who have agreed in principle to postpone the introduction of the proposed player licence fee as communicated by the Malta Football Association through a circular today.
The MFPA commends the MFA for attentively listening to the concerns raised by the players and for demonstrating a genuine commitment to collaboration and good governance. The MFA’s readiness to reassess the proposal and allow additional time for consultation reflects a constructive and forward-thinking approach to policymaking within Maltese football.
In line with this position, the coming months will be dedicated to structured discussions between the MFPA, the MFA and club representatives to examine how any such initiative, if implemented, can deliver tangible benefits to players, strengthen the domestic football ecosystem, and be introduced in a fair and well-managed manner.
The MFPA also welcomes the MFA’s decision to refund players who have already paid the licence fee, ensuring that no player is disadvantaged during this transitional phase.
All remaining players are advised to refrain from making any payments related to the licence fee until further notice.
We look forward to continued collaboration with the MFA and clubs to secure a solution that places player welfare, development, and rights at the centre of Maltese football.
