Valletta, Floriana, Marsaxlokk and Hamrun Spartans will be all out to claim a spot in the Final of the YoHealth Malta Premier Final Four as the semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday at the National Stadium.
Hamrun Spartans won the Opening Round with Floriana finishing second. The Greens went on to win the Closing Round with Marsaxlokk placing second. The fourth team to make it to the play-offs were Valletta after obtaining the third highest number of points in the two league phases, behind Floriana and Hamrun.
In the first semi-final, kick-off at 14:45, Valletta take on eternal rivals Floriana.
The Greens were the most consistent side throughout the competition. They finished the Opening Round league phase on top with 23 points but after obtaining three wins, a draw and losing one game in the Top 6, they finished second behind Hamrun Spartans. On the other hand, they remained unbeaten in the Closing Round league phase to finish three points ahead of Hamrun Spartans and after winning four games in the Top 6, losing one, they ended on top, six points ahead of second-placed Marsaxlokk.
Valletta finished the Opening Round league phase on 22 points, on level points with Hamrun Spartans, one behind Floriana but after two wins, a draw and two defeats, had to settle for third place in the Top 6, five points behind Hamrun and four behind Floriana. In the Closing Round league phase, the Citizens placed joint-fifth on 17 points and after obtaining seven points thanks to two wins and a draw and two defeats, they placed fourth in the Top 6, thirteen behind Floriana.
Valletta and Floriana met four times this season. In the Opening Round, Valletta defeated Floriana 2-0 in the league phase before the two teams shared the spoils in a goalless draw in the Top 6. Another goalless draw followed in the Closing Round league phase with the Greens winning 2-0 in the Top 6.
Meanwhile in the second semi-final, kick-off at 19:30, Marsaxlokk take on Hamrun Spartans.
The Southseasiders placed fifth in the Opening Round league phase, maintaining the same place in the Top 6, finishing nine points behind Hamrun Spartans. On the other hand, in the Closing Round, Marsaxlokk placed third in the league phase, six points behind Floriana and three behind Hamrun but in the Top 6, thanks to three wins in five matches, they overtook Hamrun to finish second, six behind Floriana and three ahead of the Spartans.
Hamrun Spartans, on the other hand, placed second in the Opening Round league phase, one point behind Floriana but thanks to four wins in five matches, they finished their Top 6 commitments on top, one point ahead of the Greens. In the Closing Round, Hamrun placed three points behind Floriana but after losing three of the five matches in the Top 6, they had to settle for third place, three points behind Marsaxlokk and six behind Floriana.
Hamrun and Marsaxlokk met four times this season. The Spartans won 2-0 in the Opening Round league phase but the Southseasiders hit back with a 3-1 win n the Top 6. Hamrun won 2-0 in the Closing Round league phase but once again Marsaxlokk emerged as winners in the Top 6, winning 3-2.
In these matches, extra-time will be played if necessary and if the result is still draw, penalty kicks will be taken in accordance with the Laws of the Game.
The two winners would be guaranteed a spot in European football as the champions would enter the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round and the runners-up would qualify for the UEFA Conference League first qualifying round. The final is scheduled for May 16.
On the other hand, the losers would face each other in the final for third place with a spot in the UEFA Conference League first qualifying round at stake. The final for third place is scheduled for May 15.
