The Futsal Malta Association (FMA) would like to announce that its current president, Mark Borg, will not be seeking re-election when his current term expires at the conclusion of the present season. Having served four consecutive terms as president and being a foundational member of the FMA since its very inception in 2011, Borg leaves behind a sport that has been elevated to unprecedented levels of professionalism and popularity under his stewardship. His leadership has been characterized by a relentless drive to modernize the game, moving it from the periphery of the local sporting scene to a position of national prominence and international respect.

The progress achieved during the Borg era is perhaps most evident in the remarkable ascent of Maltese futsal on the European stage. In 2011, local futsal champions sat at the bottom of the continental ranking lists, yet through strategic development and increased competition quality, they have since risen to the top 12 in Europe, reaching the prestigious Elite Round. This technical growth was mirrored by a commercial revolution, as Borg successfully engaged high-ranking local sponsors such as Enemed. These partnerships were not merely branding exercises; they fundamentally changed the financial landscape of the sport by allowing for the total removal of all registration fees for participating clubs, thereby ensuring that the league remained accessible and competitive.

Innovation remained a hallmark of his tenure, marked by the introduction of the Enemed Futsal Awards Gala Night, which established a formal platform to honour the excellence of players and coaches. Furthermore, the launch of the National Women’s Futsal League expanded the association’s reach and inclusivity, ensuring a pathway for female athletes within the sport. Beyond the limelight of events, Borg focused heavily on the internal machinery of the FMA. With the support of his recent committees, he significantly strengthened the association’s core functions, including match operations, venue management, and marketing departments, creating a professional framework that can sustain growth long after his departure.

Central to Borg’s long-term vision was the persistent advocacy for dedicated futsal infrastructure. His continuous efforts to highlight the need for specialized facilities eventually garnered the necessary political support and the backing of the Malta Football Association. This persistence bore fruit recently with the official announcement by the Government and the MFA regarding the construction of a dedicated futsal arena, a milestone that secures the future of the sport in Malta. Throughout his time as FMA President, Borg also contributed his expertise to the wider footballing community, serving on the MFA Futsal & Beach Soccer Committee and as a member of the MFA Executive Board.

As he prepares to conclude his final term, Mr. Borg expressed his hope that his departure will facilitate a natural period of regeneration for the FMA, inviting new blood and fresh ideas to build upon the foundation he helped lay. He extended his sincere gratitude to all the colleagues he has worked with in the Futsal Malta Association since 2011, as well as the Malta Football Association administration, whose collaboration and support were instrumental in the various milestones reached over the past fifteen years. He leaves the association confident that the structures now in place will allow the next generation of leaders to take Maltese futsal to even greater heights.
