Early goal paves the way for Mosta win against Hamrun

An early goal paved the way for Mosta as they stunned Hamrun Spartans, beating them 2-0 in a match from the VBET Malta Premier Opening Round league phase at the Centenary Stadium on Monday.

The early goal was a cold shower for the Spartans and eventually, the Blues scored a second goal to seal victory.

Mosta coach Joseph Grech named new signings Ernest Agyiri, Nathan Cross, Thiaguinho, Wanderson Gotinha and the returning Prince Afriyie in the starting line-up while PJ Ohaka, Emmanuel Ugwu, Lydeon Calleja Attard and Jamie Scerri were included as substitutes.

The Spartans had coach Marco Amelia making his debut. Jake Grech, Lucas Villela, Jack Ipalibo and Ante Coric along with substitutes Saliou Thioune and Marcelo all made their first league appearance for Hamrun.

Mosta managed to take the lead on 4 minutes when off a Nevin Portelli free kick from the left, Giancarlo Goncalves served Thiaguinho who managed to beat goalkeeper Matthias Debono with an angled shot.

With the Spartans pushing for the equaliser, the Blues scored a second goal on 75 minutes thanks to a fine rising shot by Giancarlo Goncalves from outside the area which gave goalkeeper Debono no chance.

Three minutes later, Hamrun were unlucky not to reduce the gap when Ante Coric had a free kick hitting the crossbar and the upright before the ball was cleared into safety.
