Floriana, Birkirkara fight for runner-up spot

The runner-up spot in the BOV Premier League will be at stake on Friday as Floriana take on Birkirkara in one of the two matches in programme.

Floriana lead by two points and therefore a draw would be enough for Michael Woods’ side to finish second and secure a place in the UEFA Europa League this summer. The Greens won three of the last five matches, dropping points in draws with Marsaxlokk and Valletta.

Birkirkara, on the other hand, returned to winning ways last week as they defeated Marsaxlokk 2-0 following two draws with Hamrun and Valletta.

Ironically the two teams will be facing each other in the semi-finals of the U*BET FA Trophy and therefore no matter which team places second and which one reaches the final, the two are sure of playing in the UEFA Europa League.

Floriana won the first round clash 2-0, Birkirkara won 1-0 in the second round while the third round clash ended in a comfortable 5-1 for Floriana.

Andrew Decesare and Angus Buhagiar are ruled out through suspension for Birkirkara.

Meanwhile in the first match, Marsaxlokk take on Hamrun Spartans.

After being among the challengers for a place in the UEFA Europa League, the Southseasiders lost ground being held in a draw with Floriana and losing to Valletta, Tarxien and Birkirkara.

Hamrun, on the other hand, are yet to register a win in the Championship Pool, collecting the only points in four draws.

Marsaxlokk beat Hamrun three times this season – 2-1, 3-2 and 4-2.
