Although the City of Mdina is rarely associated with sporting activities, a number of football teams have emerged from the silent city over the past 75 years.
The first known football team dates to 1929-30 when Notabile United was one of a number of teams formed in the Rabat and Mdina area following the building of the Mdina Sports Ground.
Very little is known of the early Notabile United team. An early item of memorabilia of this team, however, has survived in the form of an original football jersey. This was worn by one of the players, Paolino Farrugia, who dated the jersey to 1938.
The exhibition traces the history of football in Mdina from this early artefact through to the present day. Exhibits include records and mementoes of Mdina teams that participated in competitive football over these years.
The exhibition is being held at the Corte Capitanale in Mdina (the Mdina Local Council’s offices), and is open from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th September from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00. Entrance is free.
This event is being organised by Mdina Knights Football Club (www.mdinaknightsfc.com) and has been funded with support from the VO Fund managed by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS).
