Xewkija Tigers turn defeat into victory in top-of-the-table clash

Gozo-Football-AssociationXewkija Tigers will be starting the second phase of the Melita First Division in Gozo at the top as they turned defeat into victory beating Nadur Youngsters 2-1 in the top-of-the-table clash on Sunday.

Elton da Silva put Nadur ahead on 18 minutes and nine minutes later, Xewkija missed a penalty through Dene Shields. However the Scottish striker hit twice on 57 and 63 minutes to hand the Tigers the three points which put them four points ahead of Nadur.

SK Victoria Wanderers moved second thanks to a 6-0 win over Munxar Falcons on Saturday.

Despite missing a penalty by Fernando Giarrizzo, the Wanderers took the lead through Daniel Bogdanovic on the 13th. Peter Anizoba doubled the score three minutes later and Eric Nwankwo made it 3-0 on 34 minutes. Nwankwo added another one minute before half-time and twenty minutes in the second half, Bogdanovic converted a penalty for SKVW’s fifth goal. Eman Bugeja sealed the issue with another goal on the 90th.

In another match on Sunday, Victoria Hotspurs defeated Oratory Youths 2-0 thanks to goals by David Camilleri eight minutes from the end of the first half and Saturday Nanapere seven minutes in the second half.

Earlier this week, Victoria Hotspurs defeated Munxar Falcons 3-0 thanks to goals by Dylan Bellotti on the 14th, GLenn Bonello on the hour and Michael Bezzina seven minutes from time.

On the other hand, Kercem Ajax beat Xaghra United 3-0. Joseph Chetcuti put Kercem ahead on 27 minutes, Ian Xuereb doubled the score on the 46th and Andrew Mizzi scored the third goal four minutes from time.

Xewkija lead the way with 33 points, followed by SK Victoria Wanderers on 31, Nadur 29, Victoria Hotspurs 26, Kercem 24, Oratory 13, Xaghra and Munxar 3. Xewkija, SKVW, Nadur and Victoria Hotspurs will therefore play in the Championship Pool with the remaining teams playing in the Relegation Pool.

In the Melita Second Division, leaders St. Lawrence Spurs kept marching on with a 3-0 win over Gharb Rangers thanks to goals by Jason Theuma, Daniel Pace and William Portelli.

Sannat Lions defeated Qala Saints 4-0 on Tuesday – a match which was abandoned last weekend. Fernando de Andrade notched a hat-trick with Fabian Xuereb adding another.

On Saturday, Sannat defeated Zebbug Rovers 4-2. A brace by Fernando de Andrade and goals by Shaun Muscat and Daniel Borg put the Lions four goals ahead before Manwel Cordina and Pedro Adame Calderone reduced the gap for Zebbug.

St. Lawrence lead the way with 26 points, followed by Ghajnsielem on 25, Sannat 22, Gharb 11, Zebbug 10 and Qala 8.
