The Malta FA Futsal League continued last week with matches from both the Elite and Amateur Leagues.
On Friday night, champions Luxol St Andrews claimed a hard-fought 6-5 win over rivals Valletta to consolidate their position at the top of the table.
Andy Mangion broke the deadlock for Luxol early in the game before fellow Malta international Jovica Milijic levelled the score.
The second period was an action-packed affair with Luxol securing the points with a late goal.
Early in the second half, a quick GianCarlo Sammut brace put Luxol 3-1 up but Valletta made an instant reaction. Their efforts paid off as they scored three goals in quick succession, two from Gia Nikvashvili, the other from debutant Zvezdan Vukovic, who joined Valletta from Luxol.
Mangion and Celino Alves hit the target to restore Luxol’s lead. A thrilling finale ensued as Andrè Ciancio made the score 5-5 before Everton Veve’s goal handed Luxol maximum points.
On Wednesday, University of Malta and Swieqi Futsal featured in a 7-7 draw.
The scorers for UOM were Cedric Sciberras, Melvin Borg, Ivan Jovanovic, Dylan Musu, Christian Wismayer, Gabriel Buckson and Dennis Di Maio.
Karl Sciortino had an unforgettable debut for Swieqi United following his move from UOM as he scored five. Spanish Sergio Morales Gonzalez and Uruguayan Agustin Sosa Chamorro got the other goals for Swieqi.
With only two rounds remaining before the end of the regular phase of the Elite League, Luxol lead the standings with 30 points followed by Valletta on 16. University of Malta have eight points, four ahead of Swieqi United Futsal.
In the only fixture scheduled for this week, Luxol take on University of Malta on Friday at the National Sport School (kick-off 20.45).
In the top scorers’ list, Luxol St Andrews captain Mark Zammit leads the way with 10 goals followed by club-mate Celino Alves and Swieqi’s Sergio Gonzalez Morales with nine goals. Andy Mangion (Luxol), Dylan Musu (UOM) and Zvezdan Vukovic (Valletta) are sharing third spot with eight goals scored.
AMATEUR LEAGUE
The Amateur League also resumed over the past few days. Swieqi Futsal B chalked up three points following a 7-4 win over Żurrieq Futsal and Luxol Futsal Team B had the better of Marsaskala Futsal with an 11-4 scoreline.
Luxol Futsal Team B will be back in action on Friday as they lock horns with Żurrieq FC Futsal at the De La Salle College.
The league table sees Luxol Futsal Team B enjoy a comfortable lead at the top with 23 points, five better ahead of Swieqi Futsal B. Żurrieq FC Futsal are third on 15 points, Marsaskala have 12 points and Qormi Futsal and South Boys Futsal are level with four points each.
