Mosta came back from two goals down to beat Gzira United 4-3 at the National Stadium on Sunday. A win which puts the Blues just three points behind the Maroons.
While Gzira share the fifth place with Sirens on 27 points, two behind Hamrun Spartans, Gudja are currently seventh on 26, followed by Valletta and Mosta on 24 and Balzan on 23.
Gzira took the lead on the 7th minute when off a cross by Zach Scerri from the right, Maxuell Maia slotted the ball past goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi.
However seven minutes later, Mosta levelled matters when they were awarded a penalty after Nikolai Muscat brought Dennis Antwi down inside the area and from the penalty spot, Clayton Failla converted.
Gzira regained the lead on the 24th minute when Clive Gauci served Nevin Portelli whose assist found Maxuell Maia who headed the ball home.
Ten minutes later, the Maroons made it 3-1 when a Jackson Mendoza effort was partially saved by Mafoumbi and Toni Kolega placed the ball at the back of the net off the rebound.
Seven minutes in the second half, Mosta reduced the gap thanks to substitute Sunday Akinbule who headed the ball home off a cross by Zachary Brincat.
The Blues equalised on the 65th thanks to Dennis Antwi who slotted the ball past Zarkov off a Geoffrey Acheampong freekick from the left.
Seven minutes later, Mosta made it 4-3 with a great goal by Sunday Akinbule whose fine shot from inside the area gave goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov no chance.
