Balzan scored twice in the second half as they came from behind to beat Marsaxlokk 2-1 at the National Stadium on Sunday.
Oliver Spiteri’s side therefore returned to winning ways after losing to Gudja United in their previous outing to move back three points behind the leaders. Marsaxlokk, on the other hand, suffered the third defeat in four matches. They played a good first half but two goals which could have been avoided cost them the points.
The Southseasiders had one change from the narrow defeat to Hamrun as Conor Borg replaced Ayrton Attard while Alex Satariano and Aleksa Andrejic were handed their first start, replacing Milan Djuric and Matheus Souza.
Early in the game, Balzan were unlucky not to take the lead with an Angel Torres effort direct from a corner which hit the crossbar.
Marsaxlokk took the lead on the 24th minute thanks to a great freekick by Santiago Ferraris which gave goalkeeper Jonathan Debono no chance.
However eight minutes in the second half, Marsaxlokk goalkeeper Jose Maria Gobbi tried to dribble Alexander Satariano but the Malta international striker intercepted the ball and rounded a defender before placing the ball at the back of the net.
Ten minutes later, Balzan forged ahead when Alex Satariano served Aleksa Andrejic on the left and off the latter’s assist, Angel Torres beat Gobbi with a low shot which the Argentine goalkeeper failed to hold.
