Birkirkara, Gzira ends all square

Birkirkara and Gzira United earned a point each in a 1-1 draw at the Centenary Stadium for the Maroons to stay three points ahead of the Stripes with Hibernians now moving one point behind Gzira and two ahead of Birkirkara.

In fact, the Stripes have now gone six matches without a win. Gzira, on the other hand, won just one out of the last four matches.

Gzira took the lead on the 10th when off a cross by Nikolai Muscat from the left, Maxuell Maia headed home.

Five minutes later, the Maroons were unlucky to hit the foot of the upright with a Gabriel Bohrer Mentz freekick from the left.

Birkirkara levelled matters on the 20th when Paul Mbong intercepted a Nikolai Muscat back pass and advanced before beating goalkeeper Radelic Zarkov with a powerful shot from outside the area.

The heavy rainfall which hit the Maltese islands around the beginning of the second half rendered the pitch flooded in certain parts and on the 64th, referee Malcolm Spiteri interrupted the game.

Forty eight minutes later, the game was resumed but in the remaining minutes, the two teams failed to score although they did create some good chances.
