Second-half goals hand Floriana the three points in Old Firm derby

Floriana made sure of staying top in the BOV Premier League as they scored twice in the second half to beat rivals Sliema Wanderers 2-0 at the National Stadium on Saturday.

The Greens therefore extended their unbeaten record while the Wanderers suffer their third defeat to fall seven points behind their rivals.

Floriana could have taken the lead just past the hour when they were awarded a penalty after Matheus Souza was brought down inside the area by Denis Kouao but Ulises Arias’ effort from the penalty spot hit the woodwork with goalkeeper Rashid Al-Tumi blocking Maksim Valadzko’s effort off the rebound with Souza hitting wide.

However, the Greens managed to break the deadlock on 71 minutes courtesy of Kemar Reid who exchanged the ball with Kyrian Nwoko before hitting low past Al-Tumi.

Five minutes later, Owen Spiteri doubled the score for Floriana, heading the ball home off an Ulises Arias corner from the right.
