Marsaxlokk failed to keep the pace with Sliema Wanderers as they were held in a 1-1 draw by Hibernians at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday.
The Southseasiders are now joined by Birkirkara in fourth place while Hibernians stay two points behind.
Marsaxlokk took the lead three minutes in added time, before the end of the first half, when Fernandinho sent Yuri Messias through and the latter slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jonathan Debono.
Hibs levelled matters on the hour courtesy of Rodney Antwi when served by Zachary Grech from the right.
Ferdinando Apap was sent off for the Paolites after receiving a second yellow card on the 74th.
