Wanderers turn defeat into victory

Sliema Wanderers came from behind to beat Marsaxlokk 2-1 at the National Stadium in a clash between the two teams battling for third place.

A win which puts the Wanderers eight points clear of Marsaxlokk who are now just one point ahead of fifth-placed Hibernians and Birkirkara.

Sliema, in fact, returned to winning ways after dropping six points in three draws. Marsaxlokk, on the other hand, have now collected just seven points from the last seven matches.

Marsaxlokk took the lead on the 10th minute when they took advantage of an erratic clearance by Rashed Al-Tumi and Fernandinho served Yuri Messias on the left and the latter controlled before hitting home from outside the area.

However, on the 20th, Sliema equalised courtesy of a Samuel Gomes da Mata header off a cross by Denis Kouao.

The Wanderers forged ahead on the hour thanks to Joachim Adukor who received an assist by Geoffrey Acheampong, beating Drobnjak with a powerful shot.
