Floriana held by Balzan to allow Hamrun to move five points clear

Floriana dropped two important points in the battle for the championship as they were held in a 2-2 draw by Balzan at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday.

The Greens now trail leaders Hamrun by five points, five ahead of third-placed Sliema Wanderers. Balzan, on the other hand, join Mosta on the 20-point mark, just one point behind Naxxar Lions and two ahead of Valletta and Santa Lucia.

Floriana managed to take the lead on the 15th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Luis Willis Alves Furtado was brought down inside the area by Andre Prates and the Floriana forward made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Balzan levelled matters on the 32nd minute courtesy of former Floriana forward Jan Busuttil who slotted the ball past Kitanov following a cross from the right and an assist by Olivier Rommens.

The Greens regained the lead two minutes from the end of the first half courtesy of Matheus Souza who placed the ball at the back of the net from close range following a corner from the left by Maksim Valadzko and a header by Owen Spiteri.

However, Balzan equalised on the 66th when an Awosanya Oluwatobiloba Dimeji effort from outside the area was partially saved by the Floriana goalkeeper and Triston Caruana hit home from close range.
