For the second successive week, leaders Hamrun Spartans could not go beyond a draw, this time being held in a 1-1 draw by Valletta at the National Stadium on Saturday.
This draw puts the Spartans four points ahead of Floriana but the Greens have a game against Gudja United in hand. Valletta, on the other hand, remain third from bottom but now lie one point behind Mosta and two behind Balzan and Santa Lucia. Juan Cruz Gill led the Citizens following the resignation of Enzo Potenza earlier this week.
Hamrun managed to take the lead three minutes in added time, before the end of the first half, when off a cross by Jonny, Roko Prsa served Uros Djuranovic who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Alessandro Guarnone.
The Citizens were awarded a penalty eleven minutes in the second half after Diego Cardoso was adjudged to have been fouled inside the area; Brandon Paiber’s effort from the penalty spot was partially saved by Bonello but the Malta international midfielder controlled the ball off the rebound, placing it at the back of the net.
Valletta were unlucky to hit the crossbar with a header by Enzo Ruiz off a corner by Paiber on 70 minutes.
