With a goal towards the end of each half, Santa Lucia defeated Valletta 2-0 in a clash between the teams lying fourth and third from bottom at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday.
This win enables Santa Lucia to leapfrog Balzan and Mosta to move joint-eighth on 25 points, two ahead of Balzan and Mosta and five ahead of Valletta. The Citizens, therefore, remain third from bottom as they have now gone seven matches without a win.
Santa Lucia forged ahead just before the end of the first half as one minute in added time, Aleksa Mrdja had a shot from the edge of the area blocked by Alessandro Guarnone and off the rebound, Tatsuro Nagamatsu placed the ball at the back of the net.
Then seven minutes in added time, Santa Lucia doubled the score when Aleksa Mrdja received a through pass on the right and beat goalkeeper Alessandro Guarnone with a perfect lob from outside the area.
