Gzira United return to winning ways

Gzira United returned to winning ways as they beat Zabbar St. Patrick 3-1 in a match from the 360Sports Malta Premier Opening Round at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday.

A win which puts the Maroons, who were coming from a winless streak of five matches, three points clear of Hamrun Spartans and Marsaxlokk in the battle for a place in the Opening Round Top 6.

Zabbar, on the other hand, suffered a fifth consecutive defeat to stay at the bottom of the table.

Gzira took the lead on 8 minutes when off a cross by Thiaguinho from the left, Gabriel Mentz headed home past goalkeeper Matthew Grech.

The Saints levelled matters on 21 minutes thanks to a great first time effort by Djordje Jovicic which gave goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov no chance, off a Zachary Grech corner from the right

Gżira regained the lead on 61 minutes as Thaylor concluded a fine run on the right flank with
an assist for Lecao who beat the Żabbar custodian with a diagonal shot from the right.

Four minutes from time, Lecao sealed the issue with a third goal, concluding a brilliant run
from Gżira’s half-pitch and despite being surrounded by three defenders, he managed to beat
Matthew Grech with a powerful shot in the top right corner.
