Mentz penalties hand Gzira win over Zabbar

Gabriel Bohrer Mentz scored two penalties as Gzira United defeated Zabbar St. Patrick 2-1 in a match from the 360Sports Opening Round Bottom 6 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Sunday.

The Maroons, led for the first time by Giovanni Tedesco, therefore move further away from the remaining teams in the Bottom 6 while Zabbar remain anchored at the bottom of the table as they suffer a seventh successive defeat.

Gzira managed to take the lead on 13 minutes when they were awarded a penalty when off an assist by Thaylor from the right, Lecao had a first-time effort blocked at point blank by goalkeeper Matthew Grech and as Faysal Chouaib was about the control the ball off the rebound, he was brought down by the Zabbar custodian; from the penalty spot, Gabriel Bohrer Mentz converted.

The Maroons doubled the score on 62 minutes courtesy of another Gabriel Bohrer Mentz penalty after Lecao was floored inside the area by Strahinja Jovancic.

Five minutes from time, Zabbar reduced the gap when off a throw-in from the right, Diogo Tavares headed home from close range past goalkeeper Justin Haber.
