Marsaxlokk defeated Melita 3-1 in a match from the 360 Sports Malta Premier Opening Round Bottom 6 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Sunday to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches.
A win which puts Enzo Potenza’s side on level points with Gzira United, six points clear of Melita who are still entangled in the battle to avoid the bottom two places.
After hitting the upright with an Alex Tanque freekick on 25 minutes, Marsaxlokk took the lead on 37 minutes when off a Yuri corner from the left, Lucas Lopez rose high to head the ball home past goalkeeper Gosef Mizzi.
Seven minutes in the second half, Marsaxlokk doubled the score. Jai Quitongo’s effort from just inside the area was blocked by Ulises Arias with the ball reaching Yuri Messias who slotted the ball past the Melita custodian.
Melita reduced the gap four minutes later as Alan Borg Olivier’s fine attempt from the edge of the area gave goalkeeper Marko Drobnjak no chance.
However, Marsaxlokk extended the lead on 67 minutes thanks to a carbon-copy of the first goal when off a corner by Yuri from the left, Lucas Lopez headed home from close range.
