BOV Challenge League: Tarxien, Pieta’ secure Top 8 spot

Tarxien Rainbows and Pieta’ Hotspurs both secured a spot in the Top 8 of the BOV Challenge League as they registered wins on Saturday.

Tarxien came from behind to beat Sirens 2-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Thiago Nonato put Sirens ahead on 21 minutes but Dacosta Boadu equalised on 75 minutes and an own goal four minutes in added time handed the Rainbows the three points. 

Pieta’, on the other hand, beat St. Andrews 3-1 at the Centenary Stadium. Kian Leonardi put the Hotspurs ahead on 14 minutes and Thomas Mellilo doubled the score on 33 minutes. Ricardo Calixto Correa converted a penalty to reduce the gap for St. Andrews on 70 minutes but a Kian Leonardi penalty eight minutes from time restored the lead for Pieta’.

Marsa moved four points behind leaders Valletta thanks to a 2-1 win over Gudja United at the Centenary Stadium.  Diego put Gudja ahead on 5 minutes but Jake Engerer equalised on 22 minutes and Lydon Micallef notched the winner ten minutes from time.

On the other hand, a penalty by Timilehin Caleb Akande on 19 minutes handed Fgura United a narrow win over Lija Athletic at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Valletta lead the way with 32 points, followed by Marsa on 28, Tarxien 26, Pieta’ 25, Swieqi 22, Mgarr 21, Santa Lucia 19, Fgura, Gudja and Zurrieq 18, Sirens 17, Zebbug 16, Lija 12, St. Andrews 10, Senglea 9 and Mtarfa 7.
