Hamrun, Birkirkara ends all square

Hamrun Spartans and Birkirkara remain the only two unbeaten teams in the 360 Sports Malta Premier Closing Round as they shared the spoils in a goalless draw at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday.

While for the Spartans, this was the second consecutive goalless draw following last week’s clash with Floriana, for Birkirkara, this was the third draw in four matches. Hamrun move to one point behind leaders Marsaxlokk with Birkirkara joining Sliema, Zabbar and Hibernians on 6 points but Zabbar have a game in hand.

In the opening minutes, both teams had excellent opportunities to score with Lecao hitting the crossbar direct from a corner on 4 minutes and one minute later, Kairou Amoustapha took advantage of a back-pass by Alessandro Coppola for goalkeeper Giacomo Volpe, hitting the far post with an angled shot from the left.

With nine minutes to go, Jovan Cadenovic was unlucky to hit the crossbar with a cross shot from the left and in added time, substitute Paul Mbong went close to notching the winner, concluding a great run on the left with a low shot which was deflected into a corner by Bonello.
