Marsaxlokk secured a Top 6 finish as they defeated Melita 5-0 in a match the 360Sports Malta Premier Closing Round at the Gozo Stadium on Sunday to secure a Top 6 finish.
Enzo Potenza’s side joins Birkirkara, Floriana and Mosta on top on 19 points, one ahead of Sliema and two ahead of Hibernians. However the Paolites are not sure of playing in the Top 6 as should Hamrun defeat Naxxar on Monday, the Spartans would join them on level points, taking the sixth place on a better record in the direct encounter.
Meanwhile Melita continue to share the bottom spot with Balzan and Naxxar with the Lions having the game against Hamrun in hand.
The Southseasiders forged ahead six minutes from the end of the first half, when despite being surrounded by three defenders Alex Tanque served Yuri whose low shot from the edge of the area ended in the bottom right corner.
Marsaxlokk doubled the score on 58 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Ryan Scicluna was brought down inside the area by Alan Borg Olivier and Yuri converted from the penalty spot.
Alex Tanque made it 3-0 on 73 minutes, tapping the ball home off an assist by Ulises Arias from the right.
Three minutes later, Nikolai Muscat beat goalkeeper Gosef Mizzi with a direct freekick from the left.
To make matters worse for Melita, Gareth Barone was sent off on 77 minutes as he received a second yellow card.
Six minutes from time, Marsaxlokk scored their fifth goal thanks to a Leandro Aguirre freekick.
