A goal two minutes in added time of the second half of extra-time handed Birkirkara a 1-0 win over Sliema Wanderers in the first semi-final of the 360Sports Malta Premier Final Four at the National Stadium on Sunday.
The Stripes are therefore the first team to reach the Championship final where they will be facing the winner of the clash between Floriana and Hamrun Spartans. Whatever the result of the final, Birkirkara are sure of qualifying for European football this summer.
The Wanderers, on the other hand, will have to wait for the final for third place which would determine the other team to reach the UEFA Europa Conference League.
The Championship final is scheduled for Saturday while the final for third place is scheduled for Friday.
Birkirkara had the first attempt at goal with a Paul Mbong effort from outside the area saved by Emeka Kelvin Agu. A header by Maxuell Samurai off a cross by Alex Satariano was parried by the Sliema goalkeeper. The Wanderers replied with an angled shot by Mohamed Awad which was neutralised by Giacomo Volpe and then a cross by Myles Beerman for Vito Plut was anticipated by the Birkirkara goalkeeper.
During the second half, Mohamed Awad had a close-range effort blocked by the Birkirkara goalkeeper. The Stripes replied with a cross by Alex Satariano from the left blocked by Agu.
With no goals being scored, the game went into extra-time and after a goalless first half of extra-time, the game seemed heading for the penalty shoot-out. However, two minutes in the second half of extra-time, Birkirkara notched the winner when off a Shaun Dimech freekick, Maxuell Maia rose high to head the ball home past goalkeeper Agu.
