Balzan edge past Valletta

Balzan maintained the challenge for a top six finish as they defeated Valletta 2-1 at the National Stadium on Sunday.

A win which puts Balzan in sixth, one point behind the Citizens who share the fourth place with Birkirkara. Balzan and Birkirkara, however, have a game in hand.

Valletta were unlucky to hit the upright on the 7th minute with a scissors-kick by Mario Fontanella off a cross by Kevin Tulimieri from the right

Balzan took the lead on the 26th minute when Uros Ljubomirac sent Bojan Kaljevic through on the right and off the latter’s assist, Aleksa Andrejic hit low past goalkeeper Alessandro Guarnone.

Valletta equalised on the 64th thanks to Mario Fontanella who pounced on a loose ball and beat Jake Galea with a fine curling shot.

However five minutes from time, Balzan notched the winner when off a cross by Alex da Paixao from the left, Ivan Curjuric headed the ball outside the area and Paul Fenech’s first-time effort beat the Valletta goalkeeper.
