Gudja edge past Balzan to steer clear of danger zone

An unfortunate own goal handed Gudja United another three precious points as they defeated Balzan 1-0 at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday.

A win which, at least temporarily, puts Gudja in sixth place together with Sirens on 26 points, five ahead of Valletta and six ahead of ninth-placed Balzan. For Gudja, this was the fifth win in sixth matches and the second consecutive win after the win over Hamrun. Balzan, on the other hand, suffer a fifth successive defeat and a sixth defeat in seven matches.

Gudja scored the all-important goal on the half hour when Aidan Friggieri’s effort from outside the area hit the crossbar with the ball bouncing onto goalkeeper Vukasin Vranes and into the net for an own goal.
