Gzira beat Sirens to deny them place among top six

Gzira United came from behind to beat Sirens 2-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday. A result which condemns the St. Paul’s Bay side to playing among the bottom six.

The Maroons, on the other hand, remain fifth, two points behind Hamrun Spartans and three behind Birkirkara.

Sirens took the lead two minutes from the end of the first half courtesy of Vitor Vieira who hit home from close range following a Bogdan Gavrila freekick from the right.

Gzira equalised on the 68th minute when a Zachary Scerri effort was partially saved and Toni Kolega placed the ball at the back of the net.

Nine minutes from time, Sirens were reduced to ten men after Adrian Borg was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity – bringing Jefferson down just outside the area and from the resultant freekick, Nikolai Muscat beat Debono to make it 2-1.
