Hamrun Spartans returned to winning ways as they came back from a goal down to beat Melita 2-1 in a match from the 360Sports Malta Premier at the Centenary Stadium on Wednesday.
The Spartans, therefore, move temporarily on top the 360Sports Malta Premier league table.
Melita, on the other hand, suffer their first defeat after collecting four points from the first two matches. However, it was yet another positive performance by Clive Mizzi’s side, especially during the first half.
Mizzi named an unchanged side following the win over Marsaxlokk. Hamrun coach Alessandro Zinnari, on the other hand, opted for three changes as Mattias Ellul, Juan Corbolan and Eder were preferred to Talison, Elionay and Wendel Barros.
Melita opened the score after just three minutes thanks to a defensive blunder by the Spartans. Matthew Ellul served Mayron who left the ball for goalkeeper Henry Bonello; however the ball hit the foot of the upright and bounced onto Bonello with Matthew Debattista placing the ball at the back of the net.
Hamrun equalised on 22 minutes. Juan Corbalan delivered a cross from the right and Joseph Mbong headed home past goalkeeper Gosef Mizzi from close range.
The Spartans improved in the second half but it had to be a penalty to put them ahead on 72 minutes as Luke Montebello was brought down inside the area by Gareth Barone and Montebello made no mistake from the penalty spot.
