First Division side Rabat Ajax have appointed Edward Azzopardi as their new coach. Azzopardi signed the agreement on Wednesday evening in the presence of the club President Amadeo Zammit, Vice President Dr Sam Abela, Secretary General Mario Grima and Team Manager Etienne Cachia.
Edward Azzopardi was assistant coach at Gzira United last season. He had started his coaching career with the youths team of Zejtun Corinthians in season 2013/14 but the following season, he was appointed coach of the senior team in Division 2.
A product of Rabat Ajax, Edward Azzopardi made his Premier League debut in season 1995/96. He moved to Valletta in season 1999/2000 but moved back to Rabat on loan mid-way through season 2000/01. He spent one year with Pietà Hotspurs in season 2003/04 and was then transferred to Hibernians the following season. Azzopardi then played for Qormi, Birzebbuga St. Peter’s and following another short spell with Rabat Ajax in season 2008/09, he moved to Zejtun Corinthians where he ended his career as a player.
Azzopardi was also a member of the national team, making his debut on 28th April 1999 in a friendly game at Ta’ Qali against Iceland.
In a statement, the club wished Edward Azzopardi every success with the club and thanked Joey Falzon and his Assistant Joe Gerada for their commitment during the past two years.
