Maroons close in on Hamrun, Hibs

Gzira United scored twice in the second half to defeat Tarxien Rainbows 2-0 in a match from the BOV Premier League at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

This was the third win on the trot for the Maroons who have now extended their positive run to five matches. They move to just one point behind Hibernians and three behind Hamrun but the latter two have a game in hand.

Tarxien, on the other hand, failed to get the positive result they were aiming for after collecting four points in a draw with Floriana and a win over Balzan.

Following a goalless first half, Gzira took the lead on the 55th minute when off when a Ricardo Calixto Correa effort was partially saved by goalkeeper Jurgen Borg and off the rebound, Jefferson delivered a cross for Nikolai Muscat to hit home from close range.

Three minutes in added time, Ricardo Calixto Correa sealed the issue with a second goal, beating Borg with an angled shot from the right.
