BOV Division 1: Zejtun return to winning ways

Zejtun Corinthians returned to winning ways in the BOV First Division to keep the pace with leaders Lija Athletic as they defeated Pembroke Athleta 4-2 in one of the three matches in programme at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday.

Jurgen Suda put Zejtun ahead on the 8th minute and although Luka Mijic equalised on the 26th, they regained the lead through Christian Grech on the 32nd. Rafael de Fex Mariaga increased the lead nine minutes in the second half and Jurgen Suda made it 4-1 on the 70th. Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza converted a penalty eight minutes from time to reduce the gap for Pembroke.

Qrendi maintain the challenge for promotion after defeating Swieqi United 3-1. Leejoe Schembri gave Qrendi the lead on the 4th minute; Chris Matombo equalised on the 27th and another two goals by Leejoe Schembri on the 36th and 38th (penalty) put Qrendi 3-1 ahead. 

Naxxar Lions came from behind to beat Qormi 3-1. Luke Farrugia opened the score on the 9th minute but an own goal on the 66th minute restored equilibrium and goals by Edson Farias Cerqueira – a penalty on the 72nd and a goal two minutes in added time handed Naxxar the three points.

Lija lead the way with 36 points followed by Zejtun on 35, Qrendi 32, Naxxar 31, Pembroke 27, St. Andrews 26, Zebbug 24, Pieta’, Qormi and Swieqi 21, Fgura 19, Mqabba, St. George’s and Vittoriosa 16.
