Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo announced that he would standing for election for a place in the UEFA Executive Committee in April. Vassallo was speaking in the conclusion of the Malta FA General Assembly on Tuesday.
The election will be held during the UEFA Congress which will be held in Lisbon, Portugal on April 5.
Vassallo said that he would be contesting after receiving the approval by the Malta FA Executive Board.
“Malta was renowned for being represented in the UEFA Executive Committee for several years thanks to Dr Joe Mifsud. I feel that after a long absence, it is about time that Malta, and also small and medium sized associations, are represented once again on the table where important decision-making decisions are taken. “

In fact, if elected to the post, Vassallo would be the second Maltese official to serve on the UEFA Executive Committee after former MFA President Dr Joe Mifsud. Mifsud was first elected to the UEFA Executive Committee in 1994, retaining his post until 2011. He also served on the FIFA Executive Committee from 1998 to 2000.
“At the time, there were small associations like Malta, Cyprus and Iceland who were represented but this is no longer the case. We, the smaller associations, feel that it makes sense that not only the larger associations are represented … therefore, smaller-sized associations deserve to have a seat around the table.”
“I would like to thank the Malta FA Executive Board for their approval and if elected, Malta would definitely have a stronger voice,” concluded Bjorn Vassallo.
