The role of local football as part of Malta’s cultural heritage has been highlighted during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Heritage Malta and the Malta FA.
The main areas of collaboration that the MoU provides for are related to the management and operation of the Malta Museum of Football, and cross-promotion with Heritage Malta museums and sites in general, but with specific focus on the Rabat region.
Heritage Malta will provide assistance and consultancy to the Malta FA on the general operation of the Malta Museum of Football. It will also lend artefacts of relevance to the Malta FA for display.
Additionally, the MOU provides for the organisation of joint events between Heritage Malta and the Malta FA, as well as heritage trails which shall include the Malta Museum of Football on their itinerary.
The MOU was signed by Noel Zammit, Chief Executive Officer, on behalf of Heritage Malta, and by Dr Angelo Chetcuti on behalf of the Malta Football Association.

Noel Zammit said that football is entwined with our social and cultural history and is therefore ingrained in our national heritage. Speaking of the benefits that both national institutions are set to reap from this agreement, he remarked that Heritage Malta will be able to reach new audiences that would be difficult to access without the Malta FA’s cooperation. The Malta Football Association, on the other hand, will gain from Heritage Malta’s knowledge and expertise as well as its audience share.
