Malta FA holds annual Inclusion in Football Festival

The Centenary Stadium was filled with action on Saturday morning as the Malta Football Association held its annual Inclusion in Football Festival.

The event formed part of the Association’s 125th anniversary celebrations with Malta Football Association President Bjorn Vassallo and General Secretary Dr Maria Azzopardi attending the activity, together with other MFA, YFA and IFF officials, anniversary ambassadors, football coaches and volunteers.

Participating in the festival were nurseries from the Youth Football Association, the MFA Girls Academy, Special Olympics Malta and Frame Football Malta.

The young players showcased their passion for the game on the pitch, in a fun-filled morning, brining joy and togetherness.

During the festival, the Malta FA Football Museum was also open for all children, coaches, as well as parents and guardians, offering animated tours of Malta’s rich football history. Additionally, a fire engine from the Malta Civil Protection Department was also on display, providing the children with demonstrations and the opportunity to learn more about the direct dangers of fire and the required safety.

Before the start of the presentation ceremony a minute of silence was observed in memory of Pope Francis, with all the children expressing their praise through an ovation applause to His Holiness the Pope.

Afterwards the Malta FA President, Bjorn Vassallo addressed those present and said, “this is a day when everyone is mourning Pope Francis. We chose to participate also through football, bringing together children from different aspects of our community, giving all of them the access to be included, irrelevant of their capabilities. It is a day of joy, educating the youngsters to let go of any differences we might have and instead cultivate an inclusive culture.”

The MFA President presented commemorative banners to the representatives from Special Olympics Malta and Frame Football Malta, whilst thanking them and all the volunteers for the invaluable work towards the society. All those supporting this initiative expressed words of hope and positivity.

Anna Calleja, National Director at Special Olympics Malta, remarked that the event provides a “fantastic opportunity for athletes with disabilities and mainstream players to come together, learn from each other, and grow as a team. By celebrating our differences, we can foster inclusivity and build lasting connections.”

Speaking on behalf of the Youth Football Association, Vice President Joseph Cassar said: “The YFA strongly believes that inclusion in sports is not just nice to have, but essential in grassroots football, and everyone should unite together on that front. Let today be an example that inclusion can be a reality, and other sports should take up the idea.”

Frame Football President Rita Darmanin Carbonaro said: “This festival showcased the power of sport to unite communities, raise awareness, and provide an inspiring platform for athletes with disabilities to showcase their skills and passion for football.”
