General Assembly to elect Malta FA president on Friday

The first Malta FA General Assembly for 2024 will be held on Friday at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Floriana with the main item on the agenda being the election of the President and Vice-Presidents for the period 2024-2028.

Running for the post of president are the incumbent Bjorn Vassallo and Santa Lucia president Robert Micallef.

After serving at San Gwann Football Club in the roles of vice-president and secretary, Bjorn Vassallo served as Chief Executive Officer of the Malta Football Association between August 2010 and July 2014 when he was appointed General Secretary of the association, He then moved to FIFA where he served as Director for Europe between December 2016 and July 2019. Bjorn Vassallo was elected President of the Malta Football Association in July 2019 after obtaining 83 of the 137 votes cast, against the 54 votes obtained by Dr Chris Bonett.

Robert Micallef, on the other hand, had served as secretary between 2006 and 2007 and as president of Marsaxlokk FC between 2007 and 2011. Later he served as a member of the committee of Hibernians FC and in 2019, he joined Santa Lucia. Micallef has been serving as president of Santa Lucia since 2020 and has been a member of the Malta FA Executive Board since June 2021. In November 2021, he was appointed as the first chairman of the Malta Professional Football Clubs Association which eventually was renamed as the Malta Premier League.

Meanwhile in the election for the posts of the three Vice-Presidents, for the first time, one such post shall be filled by a female candidate. Three candidates will be running for this post – Dr Maria Azzopardi, Christabelle Chetcuti and Dana Farrugia.

The two runner-ups will join Gozo FA president Dr Samuel Azzopardi, Lija Athletic president Dr Peter Fenech, Marsaskala FC president Pierre Miceli and the incumbent Adrian Casha and Dr Matthew Paris in the election for the remaining two posts of Vice-Presidents.

Senior Vice-President Ludovico Micallef is not standing for re-election.

Other items on the agenda include the approval of the Minutes of the Ordinary General Assembly held on October 31st, 2023 and the presentation and approval of the consolidated and audited Financial Statements for 2023 and the independent and external auditors’ report.
